Behaviour: They are good climbers and the males are notorious for killing females.
Asiatic black bear are solitary and nocturnal in nature. They go for a period of hibernation though many individuals remain active during winter months.
Life span: The Asiatic bears are known to have a life span of 20-24 years in the wild.
Feeding They eat a variety of plant and animal matters. This includes nuts, fruits, ants, bark, leaves and insect larvae. The Himalayan bear tends to be omnivorous in feeding habits. These animals also attack domestic livestock or agricultural crops. It can be well maintained on commercially prepared omnivorous diet or dog food-based diets. The captive diet includes fish, bread, apples, carrots, dog biscuits and eggs. It is the most carnivorous in nature among Indian bears. The followings are the food items for captive bears: bread (250 g/ day), ripe banana (2 kg/day), egg (1 no/day), vegetables (2 kg/ day), rice (500 g/ day) and milk (500 ml/ day).
