Zoological name: The chinchillas may be considered as a
single species Chinchilla laniger or two species-the long-tailed
chinchilla (C. laniger) and the short-tailed chinchilla
Distribution: They are the natives of South America. However, these rodents are commercially reared for valuable fur in many parts of the globe.
Habitat: In the wild, chinchillas live in rocky and barren mountains or in burrows.
Physical feature: The body weight varies form 0.5 kg to 1 kg. The dense fur is bluish-grey above and yellowish below. The other features include large ears,long and strong hindlegs and tufted tail. There are 20 teeth (I: 1/1; C: 0/0; PM: 1/ 1; M: 3/3).
