The dietary ingredients taken by psittacine birds in the natural state include nuts, buds, fruits, flowers, seeds, roots, berries, nectar, leaves, larvae and insects. Captive diet: Large seed eating captive psittacine birds feed on seeds (e.g.sunflower, oat and safflower), vegetables e.g. carrot, sweet potato and green vegetables), peanuts, monkey biscuits, dry dog food, fruits (e.g. banana and apple) and mealworms. Dried egg yolk, meat, cheese, alfa leaf meal, yeast, wheat germ, vitamins and minerals should be supplemented. The dietary ingredients may be given in the following proportions: seeds and nuts (20%), yellow vegetables (25%), greens (15%), fruit (25%), dry dog food (15%) and adequate minerals and vitamins. Smaller seedeating psittacine birds may be provided with seed mixtures, bread, fruit and chopped greens. A lCockatoomay be offered paddy (10 g), grain mixture (20 g), groundnut (10 g), cooked rice (10 g), fruits and vegetables (25 g) and green chilies (10 g) I per day. The daily intake of food is estimated at about 10-15 per cent of the body weight. Water and oyster shell grit should be supplied round the clock. Food and water may be placed in earthenware bowls. Seeds should be soaked in water. These birds relish sprouts. Vitamins and minerals can be mixed with water, fruits and vegetables.
