Wild diet: In the wild, their diet consists of a variety of fruits, flowers, seeds, leaves, shoots of shrubs, creepers and succulent plants. Lizards, caterpillars, beetles, grass hoppers and mollusks are also eaten by these birds. A large quantity of stones and grit are also taken by ratites in the wild.
Captive diet: All large ratites do well on commercially prepared dog foods, and rabbit and poultry pelleted feeds. A captive ostrich may be offered gram and maize (500 g), wheat flour bread (250 g), fruits and vegetables (500 g) and onion and garlic (500 g). A captive kiwi may be provided the following dietary ingredients: beef heart (200 g), cooked rolled oats (20 g), vegetable oil (2.5 ml), wheat-germ flakes (2 g), water (160 ml) and vitamin-mineral mixture (2 g).
