It is the domestic species of the genus Cavia. This herbivorous animal has a simple stomachlike rat and mouse. But unlike rats and mice, the guinea pig's stomach is lined with glandular epithelium.A large semicircular caecum with numerous lateral pouches is present in guinea pig.
Natural diets of Guinea pig: They consume a large quantity of vegetable diets such as grasses, legumes, bark, twigs,seeds, lichen and fruits. These dietary items are also eaten by their wild counterparts.
Captive diets: Oats, ground wheat, ground yellow corn, soy bean meal, dried skimmed milk, dehydrated alfalfa meal, animal fat, minerals and vitamins are usually given to captive guinea pigs. A captive ration for guinea pig is as follows: alfalfa meal (17% protein)-350.0 g/kg, soybean meal (40% protein)- 120.0 g/kg, ground whole oats-252.5 g/kg, ground whole wheat- 236.0 g/kg, soy bean oil-15.0 g/kg, dicalcium phosphate-5.0 g/kg, calcium carbonatelO.O g/kg, salt-7.5 g/kg and mineral and vitamin premixes-4.4 g/kg.
