The commercially prepared guinea pig pellet contains a minimum of 18 % protein, 4 % fat and maximum of 16% fibre. Captive diet contains more in energy and low in fibre as compared to the natural diet. A guinea pig eats several small meals during day time. The average food intake (gj day) is as follows: 35-45 (growing), 45-70 (adult), 70-80 (pregnant), and 100-130 (lactating). The average water intake is reported to be 100-250 mIj day for growing animal and 200-300 mlj day for adult animal. Vitamin C is essential for guinea pig. Pellets may be given as powdered form. A gel diet is also accepted by the guinea pig.
