Zoological name: The well known species of hare are the European hare (Lepus europaeus), the Indian hare (L. Nigricollis), the snow shoe hare (L. americanus) and the cape hare (L. Capensis). The Indian species has 3 varieties: the desert hare (L.n .dayanus),
the rufous-tailed hare or northern form of Indian hare (L.n.ruficaudatus) and the black-naped hare or southern form of Indian hare (L.n .nigricollis).
Distribution: Hare inhabit in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. The desert hare found in Rajasthan and adjoining areas. The rufoustailed hare has a wide distribution ranging from the south of Himalaya to the river Godavari. The black-naped hare occurs in peninsular region.
Habitat: Most species prefer to live in open grassy areas. However, some species have been reported to live in different habitats such as open areas (e.g. cape hare) and boreal forest (e.g. snow shoe hare). The Indian hare inhabits in open bush country.
