Zoological name: The well known species are desert hedgehog (Paraechinus spp), the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), long-eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus collaris) and pale hedgehog (Paraechinus micropus). The last two species are found in India.
Distribution: They are distributed in Asia, Europe, Africa and New Zealand.
Habitat: Their habitats include tropical rain forest, steppe, desert and wooded or cultivated land.
Physical features: Hedgehogs are brownish to almost black in colour. The other features include elongated snouts, dense spines, short tails, relatively large eyes and ears, and strong limbs with powerful claws.
