Hippopotamus

Reproduction: The male attains puberty at about 8-10 years. The female, however, attains maturity at about 6 years. She gives birth usually to a single calf after a gestation period of 8 months. The parturition may take place in water or on the beach. The birth weight of new born varies from 42 to 50 kg. The young are weaned after one to two years of age.
Behaviour: The males are found solitary or in bachelor herd. A small territory is marked with faeces in the wild.
Life span: The common hippo may live up to 45 years.
