Hyena

Zoological name: There are three species in the family Hyaenidae: the spotted or laughing hyena (Crocuta crocuta), the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) and the brown hyena (H. brunnea).
Distribution: Hyenas are the natives of Africa and Asia. The ~ striped hyena is found in India.
Habitat: They inhabit in open plains, brush lands and open forested areas. The striped hyena inhabits preferably in open habitat or light thorn bush country.
Physical features: The body weight is about 30- 40 kg (striped hyena) or 50-80 kg (spotted hyena). The forequarters are heavier than the hindquarters. The other features include longer forelimbs, non-retractile claws, large and rounded ears, bushy tail pointed at tip, massive head with powerful jaws, large eyes, sharp and elongated canines, dorsal mane and well deyeloped carnassials. The anal pouch lies between the rectum and the base of the tail and this can be turned inside out. Both sexes are very difficult to differentiate. The female sex chromatin is 11 drumstick" appearance.
