Physical feature: The male may attain a body weight of 20-35 kg. The female has
a body weight of 13-15 kg. The colour ranges from greyish brown or reddish to
dark brown. The winter coat becomes darker than summer coat. The salient
anatomical feature of the animal is that the skull possesses a curious facial rib
(hence the alternative name of muntjac is "rib-faced" deer). The male has a small
antler and usually have a single branch. They are shed in the hot season. Males
have tusk like movable upper canine teeth.
Behaviour: They are soiitary and fairly diurnal in habit. Muntjacs, however, may remain in pairs. It cries like a dog (hence called barking deer).
Life span: The life span is about sixteen years.
