Zoological name: The Eurasian river otter (Lutra lutra), Oriental
or Asian short clawed otter (A onyx cinerea), Indian smoothcoated
otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) and sea otter (Enhydra lutris)
are some well known species of otter.
Distribution: Otters occupy throughout the world except in Australia, Madagascar and polar region.
Physical feature: The body weight may vary from 4 to 12 kg. The salient morphological features include streamline bodies, small and powerful legs, webbed toes (in most species), flat rounded heads, small and rounded ears, longer hind feet, fully haired tails, stiff vibrissae around nose and snout, and non-retractile claws (in most species). Their body is covered with water proof under fur and long guard hairs. The coat colour varies from black brown to a pale grey.
