Pigeon
Zoological name: The common green pigeon (Treron
phoenicoptera), the large green pigeon (T. capeUei), the imperial
fruit pigeon (Ducula conciana), the wood pigeon (Columba
palumbus) are well known species of pigeon.
Distribution: Pigeons are distributed in tropical and temperate
regions of the world. The majority of species, however, are found
in the tropical parts of Asia, Australia and the Pacific Island.
Habitat: The habitats include rocky hills, forests, near cultivated land etc.
Physical feature: Pigeons are stout- bodied, short-legged, small-headed and soft
plumaged birds. Their necks are rather short. The rounded bill is more thickened
towards the tip. There is a fleshy 'cere' at the base of the upper mandible in
which the nostrils are lodged. It has a large crop. Most species have a large
muscular gizzard.
