Procyonid

Procyonids are reputed for their active and curious nature. Many members are very popular pets and zoo exhibits. The members belonging to the family Procyonidae include pandas, raccoons, kinkajous, coatis, olingos, cacomistles and ringtails. They occur in tropical and temperate parts of North, Central and South Americas and eastern Asia. The body weight ranges from 0.8 kg (ringtail) to 160 kg (giant panda). The members are solitary in nature except ringtails. Most species are nocturnal. They are arboreal and move around in trees. They prefer to make their dens in hollow trees or rocky areas or they shelter in dens left by other animals.
Feeding Procyonids are known to be omnivorous in feeding habits. Their natural diet is composed of a wide variety of plant and animal matters. Pandas, however, subsist mainly on plant materials. All the members can be maintained on canids diets.
