Reproduction: The testes descend into scrotum at about two months of age. The
testes may, however, be withdrawn into the abdominal cavity through an open
inguinal canal when rabbits are frightened or exposed to cold. Males are sexually
matured at six or seven months of age in the wild while in captive condition, they
may be used for breeding pp.rpose at about 20 weeks of age. Females attain puberty
at an earlier age than males. In the wild state, the sexual maturity is achieved at 3-
6 months. The wild rabbits are seasonal breeders and they breed between February
and September in northern Europe. The domestic rabbits, on the other hand,
breed almost throughout the ' year. Rabbits are not spontaneous ovulators.
Ovulation takes place only after coitus. The naked and blind young are born after
a gestation period of 28-32 days. The young weigh about 40-50g or more.
Behaviour: Wild rabbits are nocturnal. Their territories are made by the odoriferous substances produced from the anal and inguinal glands. Rabbits dig burrows. However, the Assam rabbit shelters in burrow left by other animal. The maternal and nest making behaviours are noticed a few days before kindling (the act of parturition). Normal nest building activity starts 3-5 days before the expected date of kindling. She makes a nest with fur and other materials.
Life span: In the wild, the life span has been recorded about 10 years. In captivity, they may live as long as 13 years.
