Salt water crocodile
Reproduction: Sexual maturity is attained at about 8-10 years or more. Mating
occurs in dry seasons. The female makes a nest which is composed of mound of
vegetation and mud. The clutch size varies from 20 to 72 eggs. The weight of
eggs varies from 91 to 137 g. The young hatch after an incubation period of 80-90
days. The mother prepares one to four guard wallows near the nest. The length
of a hatchling is 25 to 30 cm. They are looked after by the mother for about 10
Behaviour: Estuarine crocodiles are more aquatic as compared to marsh crocodiles. Sometimes, the young crocodiles spend considerable time on land inside the forest. It is said that the estuarine crocodile is capable of consuming a prey even as large as a whole deer.
Life span: The life span is reported to have 35-40 years or more.
