Housing Squirrels are popular exhibits in many zoos. In captivity, tree squirrels can be kept in pairs or in small groups with a single male. Cage should be provided with tooth resistant materials. A sleeping chamber may be provided for tree squirrels. Other necessary items such as rocks, live plants and nest boxes should also be provided in order to stimulate their natural behaviour. However, the above mentioned necessary items should be replaced at regular intervals, as they get damaged by chewing. Dry leaves are provided as bedding materials. The floor should always be kept dry. A cage measuring 11 in x 8 in x 8 in may be useful in laboratory for individual ground squirrel. A pair of Malayan giant squirrel can be maintained in a glass-fronted exhibition cage measuring 3 m x 3 m x 2 m high.
