Physical feature: All vampire bats have a swollen and glandular muzzle giving a
fleshy nose-leaf appearance. They weigh 15-45 g. The fur is grizzled with shades
of brown. Other characteristics include well developed thumbs and hind legs,
pointed or rounded ears, absence of tail, chisel like incisor and razor-like canine
teeth, muscular tongue with two lateral grooves and an elongated blind pouch
Behaviour: They roost in the hollow trees, caves and culverts. Vampire bats are considered to be the serious pests of livestock. They are also known to transmit diseases (e.g. trypanosomiasis in cattle). This bat is also the carrier of rabies.
Life span: They are reported to live more than 5 years.
