Wild ass
The Asiatic wild ass, on the other hand, is distinguished by reddish brown coat (in summer) to lighter brown coat (in winter), white belly, broad round hoofs, usually no shoulder bar, smaller ears, and a brush like tassel. The mature weight of an Asian wild ass is about 290 kg. The Indian wild ass is reddish grey to fawn in colour. The lower parts of the body are almost white. Ears are short. The body weight varies from 200 to 250 kg.
Reproduction: Mating occurs in August-October. The female gives birth to one
young after a period of 11-12 months of gestation.
Behaviour: They graze in the shrubs during day time and are found in groups of
10-30 individuals. However, ass may be found as solitary animals. These animals
have a great ability to conserve water in the body and may remain without water
for many days in harsh and dry land areas.
Life span: The longevity ranges from 20 to 25 years.
