Zoological name: The zoological name of yak is Poephagus
grunniens. They are also called grunting ox.
Distribution: Yaks are confined to the central Asia and high l regions of Tibet. In India, they are found in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Habitat: Yaks prefer to inhabit an area with an elevation of 14,000-20,000 ft.
Physical feature: It stands about 6 ft and 8 inches at the shoulder and the body weight is recorded 250 to 550 kg. This animal has shaggy fringes of coarse hair coat with dense undercoat of soft hair. The colouration of wild yak is very dark brown or black. The horns are more or less rounded with outward and upward directions. The other salient features include drooping heads, short and sturdy legs and high humped shoulders.
